Investigators say Twin Falls infants died from mother rolling on them while sleeping

The Twin Falls County Prosecutor says the deaths of two infant twins last October was caused by their mother accidentally rolling on top of them while she slept.

Prosecutor Grant Loebs says the cause of death has been determined by the coroner's office as asphyxia and has been ruled an accident.

"This is a horrible situation wherein two small children died," Loebs said in a press release. "The Twin Falls City Police Department, the Twin Falls County Coroner, the forensic pathologist, and my office investigated this case thoroughly for several months and after conferring with each of these agencies and examining all the evidence collected in this case we have decided that the evidence we have is not sufficient to charge anyone in the tragic deaths of these infants.

"In cases like this, which seem so senseless, there is a strong desire to hold someone criminally responsible," Loebs said. "My office, the police, and the coroner, though, are bound to gather the evidence and follow it where it leads. In this case, the evidence tells us this was a horrific accident. Cases like this take a profound toll on all who work on them. I am thankful for the unbiased professionalism shown by those who worked on this investigation."

Loebs also says that the two infants did have small amounts of methamphetamine in their systems, but the pathologist and the coroner determined the drugs were not the cause of death. He says the amount was likely from being in a house where meth was used.

The prosecutor's office says the investigation surrounding the deaths also resulted in charges and convictions of two people living at the house for possession of methamphetamine.
