Bryce Dallas Howard has always talked about how Hollywood treats her and mistreats her because she doesn’t fit into sample sizes and she doesn’t starve herself to get roles. Even a second generation actress like Bryce gets that kind of misogynistic treatment, which says a lot about Hollywood and the male gaze. Bryce, to me, looks healthy and normal. But she’s been told by producers and directors to lose weight, and it happened again in the Jurassic World franchise.
Bryce Dallas Howard revealed that the executives behind the “Jurassic World” trilogy had issues with her body and her weight.
“How do I say this … [I’ve] been asked to not use my natural body in cinema,” the actress, who played Claire Dearing in the movie, told Metro in an article published on Thursday.
The actress, who performed her own stunts in the movies, added that it was director Colin Trevorrow who stood up for her.
“And on the third movie, it was actually because there were so many women cast, it was something that Colin felt very strongly about in terms of protecting me … because the conversation came up again, ‘We need to ask Bryce to lose weight.’ He was like, ‘There are lots of different kinds of women on this planet and there are lots of different kinds of women in our film’ and I got to do so many stunts that wouldn’t have been possible if I had been dieting.”
The “Help” star, 44, noted that she was “thrilled” to be able to do stunts with her body at “maximum strength” and hopes it pushes other directors to focus less on women’s weight and more on their ability.
The whole thing about “on the third movie,” the director finally stood up for her? It suggests that in the first two movies, producers were giving her notes about her weight and the director didn’t do sh-t. Anyway, I think it’s actually nice that Bryce has a big part in a franchise like this and that she brings a “normal woman” vibe to it. By that I mean, a woman daring to be a size 8 on-screen shouldn’t be remarkable, but it is.
